Arestantnlider

Hearing unheard voices

What connects musicians of today with the experiences of Yiddish-speaking prisoners-of-war (arestantn) 100 years ago in WWI German POW camps? That’s the riddle solved by world-renowned rapper, music producer and singer extraordinaire Josh “Socalled” Dolgin in this ingenious program. A rediscovered archive of previously unknown ethnographic recordings made directly in the WWI German POW camps provides the starting point for a roller-coaster ride of an evening that lets us hear otherwise lost Yiddish voices while shedding light on the conditions of war, coercion and racism that led to their being recorded. The contemporary biographies of Dolgin and his stellar bandmates resonate with those of the Jewish POWs, creating a conversation on equal footing and transforming oppression into empowerment. An evening full of emotional and intellectual discoveries and surprises that also rocks like crazy. Especially (but not only) for younger audiences.
